The story starts with some Great Apes destroying an alien planet, about 12 years before Dragonball. The next day, 5 Saiyans are relaxing after destroying almost the entire Kanassan race. Fasha, one of the few female Saiyan warriors, ask Bardock when his son was born, and Bardock makes a wild guess, which was totally off. His son, Kakarot, had only been born the day prior. One remaining warrior from the almost exterminated race appears to them. He gives Bardock, the leader of the group, the power to see the future, so he can see his end. The warrior is killed by Bardock, but then he feints. The Saiyans leave the planet. On an alien planet, a young Prince Vegeta is fighting some Saibamen. He defeats many of them with the slightest ease. A younger Nappa congratulates him. Vegeta wants a real mission instead of combat practice. Frieza is talking to his top henchmen, Dodoria and Zarbon. Dodoria is amazed that Saiyans took care of the aliens on Kanassa. Then Vegeta walks in and Frieza has Zarbon give him an assignment. Bardock is seen in a healing tank, and some of the doctors were commenting on how strong he is getting. His team has gotten a mission on Planet Meat, and they decide to go alone due to his mental state. Bardock starts hearing Kakarot starting to cry, and he starts seeing visions of the future. Bardock sees the destruction of his home planet, Planet Vegeta, the destruction of his race at the hands of Frieza. He also sees Kakarot as a child on a distant planet. Bardock wakes up and hears that his band of Saiyans went to Planet Meat and he departs for the planet by himself. On Planet Meat, Bardock's men are being killed by Frieza's men led by Dodoria. Then Bardock arrives and finds his men dead except for one. He tells him what happened with Dodoria. Then he dies. Bardock takes him comrade's blood covered bandana and ties it around his head. Then he goes balistick, and he kills all of Frieza's men there except for Dodoria, who has not appeared to him yet. When Dodoria appears, all of Frieza's other men present on Planet Meat are dead. Dodoria fires a blast from his mouth and it knocks out Bardock. Bardock is severely injured, and Dodoria leaves him for dead. Bardock is able to make it back to his space pod and flies back to Planet Vegeta and activates his life support system. The scientists use their scouters to tell that Kakarot has a low power level. They ship him off to a planet called "Earth," which they mispronounce. As Bardock nears Planet Vegeta, he sees his son's space pod flying away from the planet. When Bardock arrives on Planet Vegeta, the doctors put him in a healing tank. When Bardock regains consciousness, he tries to convince the Saiayns that Frieza is going to destroy them. When he tells the other Saiyans this, they all laugh at him, telling him that he has gone over the deep end. Bardock decides he must stop Frieza on his own. Bardock starts flying into space, staying in the atmosphere so he can breathe. He gets past many of Frieza's minor soldiers, and is soon confronted by Frieza himself. Frieza summons a very small energy ball, and Bardock starts charging up for an attack. He throws his attack at Frieza, and Frieza just laughs and his small energy ball becomes gigantic. Bardock's blast flies into the ball and is absorbed. Frieza throws his ball, and death starts spreading. The ball kills Bardock, many of Frieza's minor soldiers, almost the whole Saiyan race, and Planet Vegeta. Prince Vegeta is called after he finished his assignment, being told that his planet and race had been virtually destroyed and Frieza sends his condolences. Kakarot arrives on Earth, and he is found by an old man named Gohan. He decides to raise the baby as his grandson and names him Goku.
